The skill of shibori is dying out as there are fewer and fewer people with these skills nowadays. This is a stunning and rare, very gently used, quality jacket. It is much more gorgeous than it looks on the photos. The base colour is unusual to find being a mix of black and warm white. The outer base silk is a fine, lightweight lustrous fabric which has a subtle woven geometric pattern in the base texture.
This underlying pattern is almost completely covered in tiny circles, which is typical of shibori tie dye technique, so can only be seen on close inspection in the areas without so many dots. The tiny circles all over this jacket are called kanoko (spots of the faun) which are considered auspicious as deer are revered in japan. The design shows a typical botanical motif. There are a number of small blossom flowers in a design which suggests they are falling down from the treee.
Please note how the design is asymmetrical and crosses the centre seam, uninterrupted. This is difficult to achieve with shibori work and makes for a high quality of design and a higher priced item. Shibori does not only create interesting patterns, it also creates a lovely and unique texture to the silk which is somewhat crinkly and'puffy'. The texture is quite soft and only a little bumpy. The lining in the body and sleeves is a fine, ivory-palest peach, lustrous, silk fabric. It has a subtle woven pattern of peony flowers. The haori is hand-made and hand-stitched in the traditional way. The original tying cords (himo) are present which is a bonus as they are often missing. These ones are particularly nice, being intricately woven in ivory silk with some multicoloured detailing and tasseled ends.
The garment is really stunning and gives a unique effect. It is a lovely item to touch and to wear and brings something of traditional japanese culture into everyday use. This haori would make an excellent, unique and gorgeous evening jacket or a display item.Sometimes this is presented for sale as genuine shibori. You can tell the difference by close examination. On real shibori you will see that the'bumps' always correspond exactly with the pattern. Sometimes, if there are larger areas of colour, you will see ruching or a tiny outline of pin holes where the shape has been tied by stitching. On false shibori the bumpiness is usually all over and uniform and there are no stitching or ruching marks. Age & condition: i would guess that his garment has a little age. The lining, the feel of fabric and the design generally give me the idea that it dates from around the late showa period (1926-1989).
It is difficult to be certain about the age of some these traditional garments as they have been made the same way for many decades. The haori's condition is vintage excellent/ near mint overall. There are no conspicuous faults at all. Any small imperfections in the outer patterning are due to the handmade nature of shibori work and are not normally considered faults. It is very slightly musty which usually airs out.
This is an item with a little age, in fabulous overall condition but please do not expect it to look exactly like new. Size: this haori is a fairly average size for this kind of garment. It should fit a range of sizes up to a maximum of size uk 14 (maximum us size 12) although it would be also be fine on someone a bit smaller as it is supposed to be large and flowing. Cuff to cuff width is 128cm/50.5", overall length is 74cm/29", the width across the back (side seam to side seam) is 61cm/24.The weight is reflected in the postal costs.
