I so hope that all of you who have been asking for this particular style (there have been so many of you) get a chance to see this one. Quite a few of you have let me know that etsy is no longer sending you new listing notifications when i put up a new listing (ty so much for letting me know), and though i have spoken with etsy about this, we are not sure if this is still a problem. Fingers crossed that it is not. I know that so very many of you want nothing more in vintage dooney and bourke (db) all-weather leather (awl) than to have one of these so very iconic and beautifully designed speedy top-handle handbags. And it seems that most of you want one that has the very, very least amount of wear.
This is definitely one of those. However, now there are so very few to go around that are in such pristine condition, that's for sure. In fact, there are not very many left, even when showing wear. Right now this one is in the very, very best condition of any that i have.
I have been lucky enough to have listed well over a dozen of them over the yrs. And this one is right up there with the ones that were in the very best condition. This regal beauty was handcrafted in the usa from saddle tan awl pebbled leather, which is a milder, more mellow than british tan tone that is a bit like the inside of a cantaloupe or perhaps a butternut squash color. And its trim and strap are in traditional british tan satiny smooth leather. Since it is a db awl speedy from the 1990s, it has top-handles that are detachable and it has that most wonderful awl signature leather duck emblem that still looks amazing. And it is rare to find one in this style in such amazing condition, that's for sure. This one even has its original paper sticker inside of it and also part of its original stock card, as you can see in the photos. Why not offer it up to another vintage dooney admirer, yes i had better do this quickly or i will lose my courage (actually, i have been sitting here working on this listing all week, putting off listing it because i have only one like this and sooooo many want one, and i hate to disappoint anyone who does not get it not a very fun position to be in). So many vintage dooney lovers adore this style, and i get asked about this style very frequently. Officially, this is the r28 satchel style, dubbed small satchel by db back in the day, but there is nothing small about it (also referred to as a barrel bag, doctor's bag or duffel bag because of its ample size).
And one of the most stunning features of this style were its satiny smooth, thick, hand-rolled, hand-stitched, super amazing looking british tan leather top-handles. Also, it has one of those very convex, almost carved looking signature leather duck emblems that the ones from the 1980s tended not to have (the 80s version was a flatter one).
And its stitchwork is so nice and impeccable, and its solid brass hardware gleams (this is one of the very best of these fobs that i have seen in a while). The awl saddle tan pebbled leather is a rarer, eye-catching, delightful treat, too. This beautiful db awl satchel is large, roomy, high capacity, and very similar in design to the vintage louis vuitton speedy.
But unlike the lv speedy, which is typically only trimmed in leather, this db awl satchel/duffel/doctor's bag handbag is constructed completely of leather big difference (and the leather on this one is exceptionally thick, strong/rugged, and stands up on its own). This style is also a true satchel and did not come with a crossbody strap (in other words, it is not missing its strap). Its big sister, the r38 did.
But if you love this style and you know that it is large enough for your needs (it is quite large for a vintage satchel), then you can always take a vintage dooney bridle leather strap and just attach it to the top-handle mount d-rings, no worries. That converts this top-handle satchel into a convertible crossbody. And if you need some help with this concept, just drop me a convo. I'll be glad to help since the r28 is a bit less difficult to find than the larger and extremely elusive r38, this is a wonderful solution for those who desire a top-handle handbag but with crossbody potential.I love everything about this special db awl speedy its colors, condition, look, size, design and feel. It's still very solid and does not appear to have ever been worn out and about, if at all (amazing, right what a find). More about the condition below in the condition section. This vintage db awl speedy is an incredibly special one, especially from a collector's perspective. She's near and dear to my heart, but i would never, ever take her out and about, so maybe it is time that someone does.
You just do not find these in this condition any longer very often at all. Original paper sticker located under interior pocket system directly on the interior suede. Top half of the original dooney and bourke stock card. Made in the usa (mid 1990s, in my estimation).
Genuine db awl leather used throughout (the thick saddle tan pebbled leather), stain- and water-repellent. Smooth leather for trim and top-handles (incredibly well-preserved). Solid brass hardware used throughout. 1990s signature zipper, flanked with smooth british tan leather.
British tan leather zip-pull with enameled signature metal zipper tab. Thick, hand-rolled, hand-stitched with white cotton leather top-handles with brass d-rings. 1 amply-sized interior zip pocket with 6 slip pockets/slots under it.
Impeccable dooney & bourke contrasting stitchwork in traditional yellow. Solid brass db awl duck fob that hangs from its original matching leather strap that looks brand new. Official awl leather signature dooney duck seal emblem, front and center, and this is the more convex one from the 90s. And did you know that you can actually place a small padlock on this style just slip one through the top zipper's zip-pull tab and then through the tab under it, when closed, and there you go each of these leather tabs has a brass grommet in it for just this purpose. I wonder if they originally came with an authentic db lock it would be great if they did, though i have never seen one with one.
Like most db awl handbags (and also vintage coach) from this era, it is not lined. The interior lining is actually the backside of the thick leather exterior, which means that it has a thick raw suede interior, and in this case it is in an earthy, beautiful sand tone.
I cannot praise this one enough this is quite a rare find, from its rarer saddle tan awl pebbled leather to its pristine condition. The smooth british tan leather seems very on the newer side. I had to do nothing to this one, re restoration, not even one tiny touch-up.I love it when that happens. This rarer 90s style satchel featuring rarer and quite thick (especially for a 1990s db awl speedy) stands up well on its own. I would love to call it new/old stock, but i don't dare lol. It was definitely well cared for and so well-preserved.
Just look at those incredible top-handles, for instance. They do not even have any patina on them, even on their undersides, at least not that i can easily see. That, to me, is nearly impossible to find these days. And that, along with its unmarred base/bottom, and its bottom corners that have no markings on them, all help me to determine that there is no way that this glorious speedy satchel was ever worn out and about. This satchel's leather is thick for a 90s db awl pebbled leather, and its british tan leather is the more vibrant, brighter orange tone that was used in the 90s. By the late 1990s this pebbled leather started to become thinner. But when this one was made, which was around 1994-95-ish, it was still on the thick side, which helps it to hold its original shape.
Structure: its structural frame is super strong and has held up so well over the years and was well taken care of. And it was not squished under other items in a closet, so that's a great thing.
A word about structure: when shopping for one of these db awl satchels (no matter the specific style), be sure to look at the piping that trims the handbag and makes up the scaffolding/skeleton/bones for the handbag. If the piping looks wrinkly or collapsing, the handbag is starting to lose its rigid, molded shape, which does not mean that it cannot be used, of course, but it changes the intended appearance of the bag. Pebbled leather: the rarer and mellow saddle tan pebbled leather is in beautiful condition unmarred throughout. Though i thought that i found a tiny, faint scuff on one of the side panels, when we can find it (it is super hard to see), we still cannot determine if it is truly a scuff because it also looks like it is a natural striation in the pebbling. Smooth leather: no real issues amazing looking super impressive.
And just look at that proud, so very well-preserved signature leather duck the satiny smooth british tan leather trim that is used throughout is in super excellent condition pretty much unworn, even its piping along the bottom corners, which is next to impossible to find these days. And those small tabs throughout the leather arrowhead ones they look almost brand new and still have their original side-lacquer/edging this is yet another indication to me that there is no way that this satchel could have been worn. Those tabs look amazing no bending nor creasing going on. Top-handles: it does not get any better than this and if i could actually keep these incredible top-handles, i would, even with that slight stain line along the backside one. The hand-rolled, hand-stitched, smooth, satiny british tan leather handles are amazing looking and feeling.
And even their thick white contrast stitching, which looks so great on this handbag and helps to make the whole bag pop with clean lines and rich color, is in such impressive, clean condition. Their glossy brown edgework is original and still thick and fully intact. The color of the plush suede interior is a natural, sandy tan. Its interior has no stains that i can find.
The plush suede side panels are clean. I cannot find a speck of ink in it.And that it has its original paper sticker icing on this spiffy speedy cake :. Its tiny triangular leather squares that flank the pocket zipper are undisturbed, and that is almost always a great sign. Solid brass: the solid brass hardware used throughout this satchel still looks great and this includes the hanging duck fob that is one of the most unmarred ones that i have seen in a very long time. Top zipper area: no issues the heavy-duty zipper is rugged and still works very well, and the zipper's fabric border is super clean. Its smooth british tan leather is still plump all along the path that flanks the zipper. I see just a couple of barely there slight dings in it.
No odors detected and zero verdigris. This db awl speedy style r28 satchel in saddle tan/british tan is a collector's piece, especially in this remarkable condition, and especially when most in this style these days are now showing quite a bit of wear (i have several of those to list, too, one day, one day). We've gently cleaned/sanitized/reconditioned this roomy vintage satchel.
No actual restoration work needed. This speedy is sure to please. Made in the usa, dooney and bourke all-weather leather vintage classics continue to be highly sought after, and are superbly rugged yet refined, and built to last and last.
This one is so solid, so substantial few handbags being made right now can come close to being as well-made the thickest of leathers, the solid brass, the immaculate db stitchwork, the super solid construction. It's as tough as nails, just like all in the db awl vintage collection. This satchel is a stellar, stunning example of vintage db awl design.
Own an original; start your own trend :. This is a vintage item. My vintage items may show varying degrees of wear, as described in detail below and shown in the photos. If the possible potential for odors in a vintage handbag/accessory is a concern for you, please be sure to read the very last paragraph of this listing. Colors will vary from monitor to monitor, device to device, and so on.
Please be sure to read and carefully consider the dimensions of this vintage handbag. Vintage handbags are, in general, not as large as today's styles. Important: my home is not 100% pet-free nor smoke-free, but my shop (converted extra guest bedroom) is, and the door to it is closed 24/7. Also, my home is 100% fragrance-free (as much as it can be, since artificial fragrances are all over everything now and unavoidable) as i have severe multiple chemical sensitivities (mcs) due to late-stage lyme disease.
I carry vintage items that can be decades old and may have lingering fragrance and/or smokey odors. I also have the nose of a bloodhound (or vampire) a side-effect of the lyme and fragrance odors have a terribly negative effect on my central nervous system, so i really do get it. While i try my very best to eliminate all odors, sometimes it is impossible.
But i will always let you know in the description should there be any odor issues. Thank you for your understanding.
This item is made of all weather leather pebbled leather and satiny smooth leather, solid brass hardware, impeccable stitchwork.
