D i m e n s i o n s. 12 inches (length) x 3.50 inch (width/bottom gusset) x 9 inches/11 inches (height, at center; height at ends). Crossbody strap-drop: 16 inches (adjusts shorter via 5 notches). We've never run into anything like this before the leather treatment used to create this most awesome looking vintage dooney and bourke (db) hobo handbag wins our award for the all-time rarest leather look we've seen everything from the now iconic all-weather leather and also highly prized vachetta leather, to the rarer cabrio leather, coated linens and straw, toiney leather and even latigo leather (used for crafting the rugged southwestern-styled aztec collection). The panel is absolutely stumped and if you know anything about this specific leather pattern, please share let us know. This gorgeous and oh-so-rare vintage large hobo is from the norwalk collection (norwalk is the town in ct where d&b was first established). And its extremely unique leather pattern that looks like an abstract pattern of waves, feathers, fur (but this is not furry leather) and even the painting style of vincent van gogh. It was handcrafted in an amazingly vibrant blue that could even be said to be a mix of vintage db awl denim blue and also french blue, depending on the angles and lighting. French blue is the slightly lighter blue (though still very vibrant) and denim blue is the darker, richer blue.
These blues are combined with jet black leather trim and strap. And gleaming solid brass hardware is prevalent, which is standard fare for vintage dooney. I do not think that this large hobo was ever worn, or if it was, it was never taken out and about. Please see the condition section below and also refer to the collages for more info on condition.
Its size is considered rare, for this is the larger hobo size in this style. So there is quite a bit of this rare, mysterious patterned leather on display and it looks so enticing. With a strap-drop of 16 inches, this style is considered to be a shoulder bag. So shoulder bag is what it was designed to be, not a crossbody, though it will work. And its intensely blue leather seems to be coated, meaning the intensely blue patterned and textured leather. There is a coating on it that makes the swirling, vibrant blue leather impenetrable, or nearly. Between the larger hobo size and the durability of the leather, this becomes quite a wearable work of vintage db art. I do know that it is very similar in size and style to the db awl 152 style, as shown here at the always amazing horsekeeping online shop (and the one in this link is more towards the end of the made in the usa reign of vintage dooney, just as i suspect this electric blue one is, too, though a6 on the serial number does make it a bit earlier that i would have thought).
So that's the scoop. We have searched and searched to try to find this db leather treatment on any other vintage piece, and we cannot find anything. I also have researched for quite a while to try to find any info on the making of this particular db leather, and i can find nada.Such a mystery i absolutely love it :. Extremely rare patterned leather that is coated/protected, and so it is very durable, and its backside is very thick, plush suede in the same rich blue (looks like vintage db awl denim blue and french blue both very rare and desirable vintage awl leather colors).
Official norwalk collection signature emblem on front in glossy black leather, heat-stamped, and featuring a little duckie at center w/ made in u. Solid brass hardware used throughout, including 5 brass feet on the base of the handbag that help to protect it from the elements. Brass rivets stamped dooney bourke. Adjustable bridle leather shoulder strap in jet black leather.
Jet black leather surrounds the zip-top closure. Ykk heavy-duty brass metal zipper. Db interior pocket pouch that features 1 zip pocket that is framed in black leather. Impeccable dooney and bourke stitchwork throughout. Fully intact, sewn-in white with red and blue dooney and bourke label with registration number on back (it is tucked way up into the top of the handbag along a seam which is why you do not see a photo of it) the code on the backside is a6, and a indicates made in the usa while the 6 indicates that this large hobo was constructed in the second half of the 1990s-ish.
This one's such an amazing find, all around, and that includes its condition. I'll try to keep this section short since i already wrote quite a bit about the condition of this extremely rare large hobo directly on the collages. Its super rare patterned and coated, very rare blue leather has just three small, roundish markings on it that i can see, and i point them out in detail/close-ups in the collages.
It's jet black leather looks great, but i do see some superficial indentation marks on the base/bottom, which is a common occurrence with this style; some of the black leather looks brand new and all of it looks barely disturbed, including the black leather strips that go up each side and the piping along the top opening and also its little jet black leather zip-pull, which looks untouched. Its solid brass hardware is still gleaming and bright, from its strap buckle and d-rings, to its ykk zipper and solid brass rivets with almost no wear showing. It has amazing shoulder strap leather in jet black that still has all of its original edgework and looks and feels new, still stiff, and its notches seem undisturbed and possibly never used, except for the one that is currently in use, of course. It has super clean interiors that are in a gorgeous in really thick and plush rich blue suede (though there is a 150 in silver marker, it seems, written on the interior of the interior zip pocket). And the interior zip pocket/pocket pouch on this one is one that i have never seen before: it is in a thick woven cotton fabric that has a heather quality to it in its coloring, which is a light blue cotton, and this zip pocket is trimmed in leather. It has unmarred bottom corners in jet black leather that are still shiny and have no scuffing.
The black leather base trim also looks great with very few markings on it. Its top opening area, including its ykk industrial zipper in brass, its jet black leather edging and its zipper fabric, is in immaculate condition, looking unmarred, and its long brass zipper still works wonderfully. This top zipper area, which can take a beating on this style, looks picture perfect clean brass zipper and unworn smooth black leather that runs along both sides. You'll rarely find that on this style these days. Its db norwalk collection signature leather emblem patch is pure perfection with no markings, all stitchwork intact and all of its jet black edging intact, too. It has a fully intact sewn-in white/blue/red interior fabric label w/unique serial numbers on backside a6. Which to me indicates that it was handcrafted in the usa and in the mid to late 1990s. No obvious odors and no verdigris (green brass rust). This is one very eye-catching and super duper rare vintage dooney and it is so tactile, inside and out. I was surprised that it did not have its original paper sticker in it, on the backside of the interior pocket. That would have been great help we would have gotten its style code to help to solve the mystery. We cleaned, sanitized, and conditioned all of the leathers (the blue and the black). The solid brass hardware looks so clean that i did not use the special brass cleaner on it since it was not necessary. I also vacuumed the interior, which is just part of our cleaning process. I know this much: it has to be on of the rarest db large hobo pieces ever created. I remember the one that i listed in this very same style that was in purple velvet, and this one is even rarer. This one's definitely a vintage dooney & bourke work of wearable art :. This is a vintage item. My vintage items may show varying degrees of wear, as described in detail below and shown in the photos. Colors will vary from monitor to monitor and device to device and so on. If the possible potential for odors in a vintage handbag/accessory is a concern for you, please be sure to read the very last paragraph of this listing. Very important: please be sure to read and carefully consider the dimensions of this vintage handbag. Vintage handbags are, in general, not as large as today's styles. Important: my home is now pet-free (sad, but true). Also, my home is 100% fragrance-free (as much as it can be, since artificial fragrances are all over everything now and unavoidable) as i have severe multiple chemical sensitivities (mcs) due to late-stage lyme disease. I carry vintage items that can be decades old and may have lingering fragrance and/or smoky odors. I also have the nose of a bloodhound (or vampire) a side-effect of the lyme and fragrance odors have a terribly negative effect on my central nervous system, so i really do get it and will always point out any odd odors in the condition section.
While i try my very best to eliminate all odors, sometimes it is impossible. Thank you for your understanding. This item is made of patterned textured leather and satiny smooth leather, solid brass hardware, impeccable stitchwork.
